    "3.5/4.5 zoom. I made this somewhat redundant purchase because I wanted the freedom to do wide angel indoor shots using natural light, which the zoom is reluctant to do with slow film (or low digital sensitivity). I have given the lens a rather complete workout since that time, and have nothing but good to say about it, especially with respect to image quality. The two-step switch from auto focus to manual is a bit confusing, as you must (on a Nikon body) switch off auto focus on the body, and then on the lens as well (not making any adjustments on the lens doesn?t keep it from performing as expected, but properly setting it to auto focus when needed does seem to release the manual focus ?clutch? and may reduce wear on the internal mechanisms). It's macro capabilites make up for this minor inconvenience though, and along with its very effective aspherical design, pull it's "features" rating into the "excellent" category.) I carry a lot of Nikon glass in my bag, and I believe that the Sigma is in every way comparable in terms of sharpness and contrast. Both of my Sigma lenses are much lighter than their Nikon counterparts, and I must say I appreciate the all metal construction of my Nikon lenses, but the overall build quality of both of my Sigma lenses seems very good, with reasonably quiet and reasonably fast auto focus (tested on my S2 Pro). The value aspect of these lenses is in deed very high. I have not gone as far as to do deliberate exposure testing on this lens, but can say that under "normal" shooting conditions (and closely studying a recent image taken at the almost-wide-open f2.8) I?ve noticed no barrel distortion whatsoever, or light fall-off at the edges of the frame. This is a fine lens that I would consider professional grade equipment in every aspect "
